Founded in 2017 by Maëlle Dequiedt, La Phenomena creates forms between theatre, music and performance. Our creations are closely linked to the local environments where we are based and involve collaborations with residents and communities, often incorporating a documentary dimension. This original artistic language allows us to cross borders: our projects are currently being co-produced and performed in France, Germany, Belgium, Italy and Switzerland. From touring to large-scale productions, one of the company’s strengths is its ability to change formats. The company runs numerous cultural action and outreach workshops for a variety of audiences, including schoolchildren, students and associations. Since its creation, La Phenomena has been based in the Hauts-de-France region and the département du Nord.
Our shows have toured in a diverse network of sites dedicated to theatre including the Théâtre d’Orléans/ Scène nationale, Le Phénix-Scène nationale de Valenciennes, Maison de la Culture d’Amiens, Le Manège-Scène nationale de Maubeuge, Le Quartz, Scène nationale de Brest, Les Halles de Schaerbeek, Comédie de Valence, Centre dramatique national Drôme Ardèche, Théâtre du Nord, Théâtre des 13 Vents, Centre Dramatique National de Montpellier, Palais des Beaux-Arts de Charleroi, Théâtre Ouvert-centre national des dramaturgies contemporaines, Théâtre Paris-Villette, Théâtre de la Cité internationale à Paris, and to music including the Opéra de Lille, Les Bouffes du Nord (Paris), Festival Musica Strasbourg, La Cité Bleue Genève, Opera Ballet Vlaanderen (Antwerp), Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden, Opéra de Rouen, Théâtre de Caen and Opéra de Reims.
From 2017 to 2020, La Phenomena has been associated with the Théâtre de la Cité internationale in Paris. From 2019, the company became integrated into the Campus Amiens-Valenciennes, pôle européen de creation. From 2019 to 2022, it took up a long-term residency in Denain and then in Douchy-les-Mines. In 2023, it became associated with the Théâtre d’Orléans/ Scène nationale. From 2024, a new long-term partnership was forged with the Université de Lille, involving residencies, workshops with students and collaborations with researchers.
La Phenomena was awarded the Cluster programme in 2017 and was supported for three years by Prémisses Production, directed by Claire Dupont, and then by Raphaël de Almeida Ferreira from 2020 to 2023. From 2023, Hanna Mauvieux succeded him as production administrator.
La Phenomena is a member of the association Arviva (Arts vivants, Arts durable), which brings together performers dedicated to ecological transformation. The company is also a member of the HF+ association, which promotes gender equality in the arts and culture.
